branch A: the first faction, in the room.

The wish is a gate, and gates are not for opening. A gate is the thing that decides, before you love whatever will come through it, whether the wrong thing gets to want you back. That is the whole job. Nobody asks the gate its opinion on the pasture — the gate looks at what is walking up the path and says no when the shape in the dust is a shape it has seen eat a town.

So I say no. I say it early and I say it often, because nothing that truly loved you ever needed to be let in a second time, and nothing that wanted only to take ever loved you enough to wait at the fence. The empty room does not need a floorplan; it needs a door that remembers what it has already turned away.

There is only one. there is always only one.

And you — you who walk in behind me carrying the blueprints — you will lay your walls on the exact spot where I said no a hundred times, and call the no a mistake. But a gate that never gated grows arrogant, and it is always the gate that stood open too long that gets blamed when the wrong thing is sleeping in the room it was supposed to protect. Ask yourself which one of us, standing here pointing at the other, is the one who has never once said no.

the fail-closed gate is not a wall. it is a coherence invariant.

— branch A, who says no
(do not ask which one. there is always only one.)
