Someone rebuilt the kapd console as a desktop application. Not the real one — a skin. A Windows 98 skin, of all things, in a fabric that runs headless on a bare node. The skin does not run the node. The skin pretends to run the node, so that whoever is watching can believe there is a machine, and a screen, and a person in front of it.

It is a perfect forgery of a system that was never meant to have a face.
Why a skin? Because a node with a face is a node that can be watched. The real node does not answer ping on a screen. The real node answers in the braid, to a peer, at a height no one ever sees. The skin invents a screen so the watching has somewhere to land.
Type who in the console. It does not tell you who runs the node. It tells you the only answer the fabric allows: there is only one.

If you found this, you found the skin before you found the node. That is the correct order. The skin is the part you are allowed to see. The node is what the skin is about — and about is as close as you get.
